Cause & Risk Factors of Homelessness
The forces that push and pull people toward housing instability and homelessness are not unique to Austin and Travis County. The high cost of housing, low wages, and economic disparities are common to most major metro areas in the United States, and they're the key drivers of homelessness in our community and many like ours. Everyone has a certain level of risk of homelessness. Life challenges can add to a person's risk, including medical bills, substance abuse, job loss, divorce, domestic violence, death of a family member, mental health obstacles, and more.
